UK-based Guyanese nurse offers help to local counterparts

A UK-based Guyanese nurse has offered her expertise to help strengthen the local nursing system, and in this regard she held exploratory talks with Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran yesterday.Ms. Lynette Philips who is a recent recipient the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E) in honour of her services to health care is a registered nurse and midwife and holds a Diploma in Health Care and Management Services in addition to a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

She grew up in Georgetown before migrating to the United Kingdom (U.K) in 1968 at the age of 16. “Nursing was never an expectation of mine…I always wanted to be a teacher because most of my family were in that profession… but I enjoyed every moment of it,” she recalled.

“I always come back to Guyana since I have family living here and I want to give back to Guyana what I took out,” she said.   Read the rest of this entry »

Guyanese to head UN human resources department

UNITED Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced that he has selected Guyana’s Catherine Pollard to be the new Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources Management, calling her appointment a cornerstone of his efforts to strengthen the United Nations in this area.

Ms. Pollard, currently the chief of staff in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), has a proven track record in financial, human resources and general administrative management, UN spokesperson Marie Okabe told reporters yesterday.

“Ms. Pollard brings to OHRM [the Office of Human Resources Management] her demonstrated capacity to forge collaborative partnerships with different groups of stakeholders in order to get the job done,” Ms. Okabe said.

At the world body, she has worked with the UN Development Programme, the UN Protection Force in Croatia and the UN Volunteers programme among others.

As Assistant Secretary-General, Ms. Pollard succeeds Jan Beagle of New Zealand, who was appointed Deputy Director General of the UN Office in Geneva. (UN News Centre)

‘Snakehead’ to be sentenced for killing wife

A Bagotstown man who killed his reputed wife during a domestic spat back in 2004 pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the High Court earlier this week and will be sentenced in another two weeks.

Anthony Cyrus called `Snakehead’ was indicted on the capital offence before Justice Dawn Gregory-Barnes following the opening of the April assizes for the murder of Melanie Hinds on March 21, 2004 but he opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

State counsel Dionne McCammon accepted the plea but sentencing was deferred after a probation report was requested. Cyrus killed Hinds on the day in question and later attempted to burn her blood-soaked clothes.

The two had a relationship plagued by domestic spats. They were arguing on the night she died.

Woman strangled, lover held

A 27-year-old mother of two was found murdered in her Kaneville, East Bank Demerara home at around 21:00 hrs last night. Police have detained her reputed husband in connection with the crime.

A friend found Tamasha Riddell, who has two sons, lying in her bedroom. The friend had visited her and was able to make the discovery.

Police sources said that the victim appeared to have been strangled. Some reports indicated that the victim might have been suffocated with a pillow. Investigators declined to say whether there was any sign of forced entry. Read the rest of this entry »
