Man remanded for incest

A 34-year-old man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with two counts of incest.
The accused, Leroy Hosea, made his first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It is alleged that on February 5, last, Hosea, who is a chain saw operator, had carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old at Kumuni Creek, West Bank Demerara.

It is also alleged that some time between Thursday January 1, last, and January 31, last, he had carnal knowledge of the same female at Mabura. The charges were indictable and Hosea was not required to plea. The accused has been remanded to prison until his trial begins.

Hosea is expected to make his next court appearance at the Christianburg Magistrate’s then at the Wales Magistrate’s Courts on May 8.

Trio freed of ‘Ole Higue’ murder

After almost a year in custody, three residents of Bare Roots, Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara, were released yesterday for the killing of Radicha Singh who was beaten to death after she was mistaken for the mythical Ole Higue.

Althea Roberts, Roland Spencer and former policemen, Ryan Bobb, walked out the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court after Magistrate Sherland Issacs discharged them after he upheld no case submissions by their attorneys Hukumchand, Nigel Hughes and Oswald Legall.

The discharge stemmed from the absence of the prosecution’s main witness who had implicated them in the killing.

Kaieteur News understands that police were unable to locate the witness shortly after she had given a statement that alleged that the trio had beaten the woman to death on April 28 last year. There are reports that the witness had disappeared after the trio had also implicated her in the beating.   Read the rest of this entry »

Accused rapist threatens magistrate after High Court committal

A 25-year-old man made threatening remarks to Magistrate Fazil Azeez last week after he was committed to stand trial for rape.

Kenroy Fraser, of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, was charged with having carnal knowledge of a girl under 15 years of age. The incident was alleged to have been committed between October 31, 2006 and December 1, 2006 at Swan Street, Pouderoyen.

The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) was conducted at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court. After finding that a sufficient case was made out, Magistrate Azeez informed Fraser that he will face a judge and jury at the next sitting of the Demerara Criminal Sessions.

After the decision, Fraser who stood unrepresented, began uttering abusive remarks and threatened to harm the magistrate. He was hastily removed from the courtroom but resorted to a barrage of expletive-laden expressions to vent his feelings. Read the rest of this entry »
