Stabroek News – June 29, 2005

Dear Editor,

I was in Blairmont Court and I was extremely shocked to hear that the mother of the ten-year-old girl who was raped by her father (name given) is asking the court to withdraw the case. I could not refrain from contacting the probation officer in Berbice only to be told that this is a normal situation in Guyana, however I was given another telephone number by him to call.

When I called that number a series of other telephone numbers was given to me. The last number was Minister Shadick’s Office and the same thing was said to me. If the mother doesn’t want a problem there is nothing anyone can do.

I am asking isn’t there anyone to protect this child. Obviously the mother and the law are failing to do so. In effect fathers can rape their daughters because their wives will protect them from the law.

I sincerely hope that someone in relevant authority will look into this matter.  This next court date is July 18, 2005.

Yours faithfully,

Tricia Mangru
