Kaieteur News – May 10, 2006

A 13-year-old girl has told the police that she ran away from home after her mother refused to believe that she was gang-raped three months ago.

The girl, who was reunited with her mother on Monday, revealed the shocking details of how she was gang-raped by three men who had forced her into a car at gunpoint.

Kaieteur News understands that when the teenager, who attends a city secondary school, first told her mother about the incident in March this year, the woman did not pay too much attention to it.

A source told this newspaper that the mother is claiming that since her teenaged daughter was “following bad company,” she was not convinced that the child was telling the truth.

A medical examination revealed that the child is sexually active but it could not determine if she was indeed gang-raped two months ago.

The teen told investigators that she had gone to her aunt’s home in Albouystown to plait her hair in March.

On her way back home, a car with three men inside pulled up alongside her and the driver got out. He reportedly placed a gun to her head and forced her into the back seat where the two other men were sitting.

She said that she was then driven to Cemetery Road where the men took turns raping her, before they abandoned her.

The teenager said she went home and told her mother what had happened.

She however could only give detectives the first two digits of the car that the men reportedly used.

Realising that her mother was paying scant attention to her concerns, the teen said she ran away from home two weeks ago.

Her mother, who then began fearing for her daughter, reported to the police that the child was missing. It was only yesterday that she managed to locate her.

Police are investigating the child’s story.
