Kaieteur News – Aug. 19, 2006

The Director of Public Prosecutions has recommended that the Justice For All party Presidential Candidate Chandra Narine Sharma be charged with indecently assaulting a minor.

Sharma, the popular owner of CNS Channel 6 television station, is accused of indecently assaulting an 11-year-old girl at a house at 143 Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara during the month of July.

The recommendation of the charge stemmed from a report made by the child’s mother, who is reportedly close to the Presidential Candidate.

Sources close to Sharma told Kaieteur News that the move to charge him is nothing but a political campaign to besmirch his character.

According to reports, six weeks ago the victim’s mother went to the police and first reported that Sharma had assaulted her.

The police contacted the television station owner and a confrontation was held between himself and the woman.

In the end, the police found no reason to charge Sharma.

A few days later, the woman returned to the police, and this time she alleged that Sharma had indecently assaulted her 11-year-old daughter.

The child was taken for a medical examination and it was revealed that her hymen was still intact.

However, the woman claimed that Sharma had performed an indecent act on the child and had also fondled her.

Police prepared a report and were initially not going to press charges.

However, according to a source, the Director of Public Prosecutions requested the file on the matter, and after more than a week of studying it, recommended that charges be instituted.

This is not the first time that allegations of similar nature have been made against CN Sharma.

About five years ago he was placed before the court for a similar offence.

The Presidential Candidate is expected to be charged soon, and is likely to appear in court sometime this week to answer the most recent charge.

Sharma could not be reached when this newspaper contacted his office for a comment on how the new development will affect his elections campaign.
