By mid next month the new regulations, which are currently being drafted under the Domestic Violence Act 1996 to make the act more effective, are expected to completed, Minister of Human Services & Social Security, Priya Manickchand has said.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release, while the minister was speaking at a women’s forum at Hopetown Community Centre, West Coast Demerara, Region Five last weekend she said the act was good piece of legislation but there needs to be some amendments.

“We are in the process of finalising a National Policy on Domestic Violence. This policy will then be reduced into a National Plan of Action. These are things the government has to do, and is doing, but it’s up to you the women, to ensure you know your rights under the act and make use of it,” the minister was quoted as saying.

According to the release, the minister explained that the government through her ministry is working with other agencies, including non-governmental organisations on programmes to reduce, eradicate and ultimately eliminate domestic violence. She urged that women recognise their rights under the act since the government was committed to upholding and ensuring the provisions under the act are implemented. The release said these include the provision of a safe place for victims of domestic violence, police action in domestic violence cases among other critical interventions to reduce and stop domestic abuse.

The release stated that the intention of the law is to lower the high rate of domestic violence and includes protection, occupation and tenancy orders. The law also allows the courts to protect members of families from all forms of abuse within the household and makes abusers aware that there are ways to deal with their violent behaviour.
