Ten females murdered in six months

Although murders and other serious crimes decreased for the first six months of 2007, crimes of passion, in which females were slain by spouses or lovers, appear to be on the rise.

According to police statistics, there were 54 murders, 336 reported armed robberies, 47 reports of rape, and 369 break-and-enter cases within the first six months and twelve days of this year.

Seven of the murders were execution-style killings.

In 2006, there were 70 murders, 449 armed robberies, 83 cases of rape, and 525 cases of break and enter and larceny within the first six months and 12 days of the year.

Twenty-four execution-style killings occurred between January and April.

Statistics compiled by Kaieteur News show that eleven females were slain between January and mid-July, 2006. However, there was only one apparent “crime of passion”.

This occurred when an elderly woman and two girls perished in a fire, which was allegedly started by a disgruntled man who was trying to kill his spouse.  

Three other females were executed, two more were killed during robberies, two were murdered by unknown persons, and one, a 16-year-old schoolgirl, was raped and murdered in a relative’s home.

In comparison, ten females were slain for the same period this year. Five of these victims were allegedly slain by spouses or male acquaintances.

Five of these murders occurred in Linden , two on the East Bank of Demerara, one on the West Coast of Demerara and two in the interior.

On February 6, Eileen Lall, 42, was stabbed to death at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara. Her husband was subsequently charged.

Also in February, Lakha Kumari, 58, was beaten and strangled in her Kara Kara, Linden home. Two persons were charged.

On February 12, the bound and partly-burnt body of 21-year-old Nazaline Mohamed was found in a coal pit at Third Phase, Wisroc.

Police have identified a suspect in the case but he has since gone into hiding.

In March, Mona Lisa Rigby, a 23-year old seamstress, was beaten and strangled at Kara Kara.

A suspect was charged with her murder.

In April, Melissa Anthony, a 25-year-old teacher, was murdered in her home at Retrieve, Linden .

Shortly after, 44-year-old businesswoman Juliet Forde was murdered at Mahdia, Potaro .

In May, 14-year-old Donnis King was shot at point blank range, allegedly by her 17-year-old boyfriend. She died two months later.

On June 16, a female was hacked to death, allegedly by her reputed husband, at Den Amstel, West Bank Demerara.

In June, 53-year-old live-in housekeeper, Aloyisa Bernard, was found strangled in her employer’s home at Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara.

On July 8, policewoman Eleanor Jones, 28, was shot dead at Silver Town , Wismar , allegedly by a policeman with whom she had a relationship.

He has since been charged.
