Buggery accused faces court – allegedly gave 10-year-old victim $1,000 to buy silence
Kaieteur News – October 4, 2007
When Roy Rahaman’s charge was read to him in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday, the details prompted several resounding gasps as well as looks of scorn for the accused from those present. The man reportedly had anal sex with a 10-year-old girl.
When the alleged victim was asked to be presented in court the spectators mumbled expressions of shock and disgust at the accused. Soon after, the child was escorted from the courtroom.
Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle had already informed Rahaman that he was not required to plead to the indictable charge of buggery. Rather she was just informing him as to why he was in court.
She informed him that his matter will address the magistrates’ court in the form of a Preliminary Inquiry that would determine whether there is enough evidence to commit him to trial in the High Court.
Kaieteur News understands that on September 24, last, the molested juvenile, a 10-year-old, was walking home from school when the accused allegedly enticed her into a yard in Alberttown.
He reportedly held onto her, committed the act, then gave her a $1,000 and told her that she could share it with her friends.
The man told the magistrate that he was a 22 year-old married father of two daughters, aged nine and eight, and that “my wife in Leguan.”
He could not give a specific address except to say that he was a resident of, “ Well Road , Agricola,” and that he had lived there for a long time.
Prosecutor Sherwin Mathews told the court that he would object to any bail application by the unrepresented man given that the act was committed on a juvenile and that the accused could not provide a specific address.
He was remanded and ordered to return to court on October 31.
