The Guyana Amateur Women’s Basketball Association (GAWBA) will host a two–day basketball competition to select their final team for the Gillian Brazier Basketball Shoot–Out in Antigua.

In an effort to identify Guyana’s best female team for the event, two games will be staged at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall this weekend. Both of those games will be followed by a renewed rivalry among Guyana’s top three male teams.

“The GAWBA will be heading to Antigua to attend their first ever Gillian Brazier Basketball Shoot–Out which is scheduled for January 17–20,” a release from the association stated yesterday.

“Tomorrow a Linden female basketball team will face off with their Georgetown counterparts. Following this, Ravens will play ball with Linden’s Kings. The second game comprises all male players,” the release signed by GAWBA President Michaela Burnette stated. The action continues the following day with the Antigua tour select playing against a combined team and that game will be followed by Ravens versus Courts Pacesetters. Action on both nights begins at 19:00 hrs sharp.

“The women’s team will no doubt attempt to bring home the trophy and they’ve been training hard under the guidance of national coaches Mark Agard and Abdulla Hamid,” the release continued.

The association also highlighted International Basketball Federation (FIBA) qualified national coach Bobby Cadogan “for his sterling contribution to the field” of players over their three months of preparation.

Guyana’s participation at the Gillian Brazier Basketball Shoot–Out will mark the first time that a women’s basketball team has been invited to the event. The competition is an annual one and has been played for past eight years. It is seen as an opportunity for all promising women basketball players to benefit from international exposure, while assisting them to prepare for other international engagements.
