The capacity-building workshop organised by the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute (GWLI) has concluded with over 200 women completing the training programme.

The project, under the theme, “Capacity Building for Skills Advancement and Leadership” targeted women’s group in the 10 Administrative Regions except Regions Seven and Eight.

The workshop which catered for 40 women and girls in each region provided knowledge and information to develop and enhance their leadership capacity, its aim, also, was to improve participation and influence decisions that affect women’s lives outside the broader family domain.

During October to December, 199 participants completed the programme in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six and 10. In Region Nine, 22 of the 29 participants were selected as trainers to replicate the programme in 42 communities.

Some of the main subjects offered in the first phase are self, leadership, community development, communication, image building and etiquette, healthy lifestyles and skills training.

The subject areas are a boost to government’s resolve to eliminate all forms of discrimination and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
The GWLI operates under the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and has been aiding Government’s vision through various initiatives to improve the lives of Guyanese, particularly women.

Women and girls were nominated and recruited from Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Faith Based Organisations, women’s arms of political parties and other leaders within the communities.
