Guyana Chronicle – March 27, 2008

GREGORY Mettelholzar, charged with carnal knowledge of a girl under 15 years old, yesterday appeared before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle to answer that charge.

The accused, 25, of Lot 43 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, was not required to plead to the charge which said on last December 18 at Berbice, he committed the act on a 13-year-old female.

He was represented by attorney-at-law Mr. Nigel Anthony who made an unsuccessful application for bail.

Anthony said the accused is the owner of Mike’s Supermarket in Stanleytown and has been in custody since last March 19.

He claimed that the relatives of the virtual complainant apparently discovered that the allegation she was making is false and so they went to his office to ask for the matter not to reach the court.

Anthony also claimed that his client was charged in Georgetown only because a relative of the girl works at Eve Leary Police Station.

But Police Corporal Gordon Crawford, prosecuting, said the Prosecution had clear instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to proceed with the charge.

Crawford also said that it is alleged that this offence was committed by the accused several times in the past.

The Court ruled in favour of the Prosecutor and remanded Mettelholzar to prison until April 11.
