Kaieteur News – April 19, 2008

A 25-year-old man made threatening remarks to Magistrate Fazil Azeez last week after he was committed to stand trial for rape.

Kenroy Fraser, of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, was charged with having carnal knowledge of a girl under 15 years of age. The incident was alleged to have been committed between October 31, 2006 and December 1, 2006 at Swan Street, Pouderoyen.

The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) was conducted at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court. After finding that a sufficient case was made out, Magistrate Azeez informed Fraser that he will face a judge and jury at the next sitting of the Demerara Criminal Sessions.

After the decision, Fraser who stood unrepresented, began uttering abusive remarks and threatened to harm the magistrate. He was hastily removed from the courtroom but resorted to a barrage of expletive-laden expressions to vent his feelings.

During the Preliminary Inquiry (PI), Fraser’s father was upbraided on many occasions for his inappropriate utterances. In an unrelated matter, Michael Rouse, of Hubu, East Bank Essequibo was charged with indecently assaulting one of his wife’s relatives.

The charge alleged that Rouse molested the eight-year-old girl on March 14, 2008 at his home. He appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Fazil Azeez.

Rouse, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Ramsahoye Rambajue told the court that the charges stemmed from a complaint the victim made to her aunt.

Rouse is to make a second appearance on May 22. Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man facing two counts of rape was freed of one charge after the victim said she did not wish to proceed with the matter.

Roscie Mercuries of Lot 3 Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, was discharged by Magistrate Fazil Azeez when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court. Mercuries was accused of molesting two sisters aged 14 and 16. The incident is alleged to have occurred on October 22, last year.

However, the 16-year-old victim told the court that she was not inclined to testify and as such did not plan to pursue further action.

Her sister who now resides with an aunt indicated that she will proceed with the charge.

Mercuries will return to court on April 23 for trial.
